Indoor rock climbing is a sport where you scale artificial walls that mimic natural rock faces. The walls are built from reinforced panels, and holds are attached with bolts or suction cups. You use a harness, climbing shoes, and chalk to keep grip. The goal is to reach the top of a route, which is marked by a chalked “top‑rope” or a fixed “lead” rope.
How to Pick the Right Gym for You
When you’re looking for a gym, start with three concrete questions:
- What is the range of wall heights? A good gym will have routes from 5 m to 12 m.
- Does the staff offer a beginner class every Friday at 6 pm?
- What is the average wait time for a top‑rope session? Ideally under 15 minutes.
If a gym answers “yes” to all three, it’s worth a visit.
Top Five Gyms in London
1. The Climb Hub – Stratford
Opened in 2014, The Climb Hub boasts 35 m of wall space and a 10‑meter bouldering area. The staff runs a 30‑minute “Start‑Up” class every weekday. Their chalk station is stocked with two brands, so you can try both. The only downside? The gym closes at 10 pm, so early‑morning climbers must arrive by 7:30.
2. Vertical City – Shoreditch
Vertical City offers a 12‑meter wall and a dedicated “lead” section for advanced climbers. The gym’s layout is open, allowing you to move freely between routes. Their monthly membership costs £45, and they give a free 10‑minute session to new members. The catch is that the gym’s Wi‑Fi is notoriously spotty during peak hours.
3. Boulder & Beyond – Chelsea
With a 7‑meter bouldering wall and a 6‑meter top‑rope area, Boulder & Beyond is a favorite among university students. The gym offers a free “bouldering night” every third Thursday. However, the gym’s air conditioning can be a bit chilly in the summer.
4. Peak Performance – Wembley
Peak Performance’s 10‑meter wall is split into three zones: beginner, intermediate, and advanced. The gym provides a complimentary helmet with every membership. The only limitation is that the gym is located in a busy shopping center, so parking can be a headache.
5. Summit Studio – Notting Hill
Summit Studio features a 9‑meter wall and a 5‑meter bouldering area. They run a weekly “Climb & Chill” event, pairing a climbing session with a craft beer tasting. The price for a day pass is £12, which includes a free chalk bag. The downside? The gym’s opening hours are 8 am to 9 pm, so late‑night climbers are out of luck.
What to Bring on Your First Visit
A good climbing kit is surprisingly simple:
- Climbing shoes (tight but not painful)
- Chalk bag with 200 g of chalk
- Harness (if you plan to try lead climbing)
- Water bottle (the gym’s water station is only at the entrance)
Don’t forget a towel; most gyms provide a towel rack, but it’s better to have your own.
